Staying in nearby Kingston SE, enjoy pristine beaches and protected wetlands, all while soaking up the region’s rich heritage and vibrant community life.

Day One – MONDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2025

We commence our scenic journey with home pick-ups via chauffeur-driven cars, before setting off through the picturesque Mount Lofty Ranges. Our first pause is in Tailem Bend, where we will have our morning tea.

Rejuvenated, we proceed through the country towns of Coonalpyn and Tintinara, making our way to Keith for a delightful light lunch. Continuing south onto the Riddoch Highway, our journey takes us towards the captivating Limestone Coast.

By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Kingston SE, a charming town nestled on the shores of Lacapede Bay. Established in 1858 by the statesman George Strickland Kingston, this town blossomed into a bustling seaport and is now famed for some of South Australia’s safest beaches.

Upon arrival, we embark on a town tour, highlighted by a visit to the historic Cape Jaffa Lighthouse. Originally constructed over 20 kilometres away on Margaret Brock Reef, the lighthouse was deactivated in 1973 and relocated to Kingston in 1976, where it now serves as a fascinating museum.

Our stay for the next three nights will be at the Lacapede Bay Motel (Ph. 8767 2444), where you will have time to settle in before we head out for dinner at the local hotel, perfectly rounding off our first day.

Day Two – TUESDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2025

After breakfast at the local cafe near our motel, we set off for Millicent. Our first visit is to McCourts Garden Centre, nestled in a historic building that dates back 136 years. Here, you can explore a delightful nursery and gift shop, where we enjoy morning tea in the charming café.

Our journey continues with the Windfarm Tourist Drive, taking us towards Lake Bonney- one of South Australia’s largest freshwater lakes. Dominating the landscape are the vast wind turbines of Lake Bonney and Canunda Wind Farms, forming the largest wind farm development in the Southern Hemisphere.

We then travel to Southend at the southern tip of Rivoli Bay, known for its pristine sandy beaches and water sports. A visit to Cape Buffon offers stunning ocean vistas before heading to Beachport, where we have lunch at a local café. Beachport, with its 772-meter-long jetty — the second longest in South Australia — provides an excellent opportunity for a leisurely walk.

Our route then takes us along Bowman Scenic Drive, showcasing breathtaking coastal views and the Pool of Siloam, renowned for its healing properties due to the high salinity. We’ll make a detour to Woakwine Cutting, an impressive engineering feat accomplished by just two men and a tractor. This canal, designed to drain swampy farmland, features a viewing platform and exhibits detailing its construction.

We conclude our day’s adventure with a return to Kingston SE, reflecting on a day filled with natural beauty, historical insights and serene landscapes.

Day Three – WEDNESDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2025

After breakfast, we head south to Mount Benson, near the coastal town of Robe, to visit the unique Humpalicious Camel Farm. This small-scale, ethically run farm is the only renewably powered camel dairy in Australia, and perhaps the world. Joining the Morning Milking Tour, where you’ll help handfeed the baby camels and sample some of the nutritious camel milk and its products, known for their health benefits.

Next, we explore Robe, situated along the picturesque Guichen Bay. Once South Australia’s third-largest port and now a beloved holiday destination, Robe offers a blend of historical charm and scenic beauty.

We visit Transmutation, an innovative plastic recycling business where plastic waste is transformed into high-quality products like bowls and pens—a true testament to creativity and environmental responsibility.

After enjoying lunch in Robe and some free time to explore the local shops, our tour continues around the town. We take in its rich history and diverse scenery, from tranquil swimming beaches to dramatic, rugged coastlines.

Our day concludes back in Kingston SE, where there is time to unwind at our accommodation before making our way to dinner. This day offers a perfect mix of unique experiences, local culture, and natural beauty.

Day Four – THURSDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2025

After a nourishing breakfast, we bid farewell to our hosts and take a brief detour west to the southern tip of Lacapede Bay.

Here, the peaceful seaside village of Cape Jaffa presents a tranquil retreat, distinguished from its busier neighbours. We explore the Anchorage, a newer marina development that boasts an estate, fishing port, and tourist accommodations. Pausing to soak in the spectacular ocean views, we then return to Kingston for morning tea.

Our journey home takes us north along the Princes Highway to the Coorong’s southern end. This extensive stretch of shallow lagoons, protected by the Younghusband Peninsula’s sweeping sand dunes, spans over 130 kilometres and provides a sanctuary for myriad bird species. The Coorong is not only a national park and a wetland of international significance but also holds deep cultural importance for the Ngarrindjeri people.

Lunch awaits at the Meningie Hotel, after which our drive continues to Tailem Bend for a refreshing break.

We then journey along the freeway, arriving back in Adelaide refreshed and enriched by our delightful spring escapade by the beach.
