Your Itinerary
DAY 1 | Monday 18 May 2026 | Journey to Mildura
Our adventure begins with an early morning departure from Adelaide, travelling north through South Australia’s varied landscapes. After collecting our northern passengers, we pause at Pioneer Park in Gawler for morning tea before continuing our journey along the scenic route to Waikerie. Here, nestled beside the Murray River, we’ll enjoy lunch with views of the water, choosing between the renowned local bakery or the riverside café at Illalangi Gourmet Foods. The afternoon takes us deeper into river country, passing through Renmark before crossing into Victoria where we adjust our watches forward by thirty minutes to Eastern Standard Time. As the late afternoon sun casts golden light across citrus orchards and vineyards, we arrive at Best Western Chaffey Motor Inn (03 5023 5833), our comfortable and centrally located home for the next three nights. After settling into your room, join fellow travellers for dinner at the hotel, preparing for tomorrow’s journey into ancient landscapes.
DAY 2 | Tuesday 19 May 2026 | Mungo National Park
Today’s full-day expedition into Mungo National Park reveals one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites. Under the expert guidance of Discover Mildura Tours, we journey across red sand plains to this World Heritage-listed landscape where ancient lake systems once supported thriving Aboriginal communities. Morning tea at Mungo Lookout provides sweeping views across the stark beauty of this 40,000-year-old landscape. Our guided walk along the Walls of China reveals spectacular lunar-like formations of wind-sculpted sand and clay, remnants of ancient lake shores where archaeological discoveries have rewritten Australia’s human history. Visit the Historic Mungo Woolshed where pastoral heritage meets ancient stories, then explore the Mungo Visitor Centre’s fascinating displays including the remarkable Ice-Age Footprint cast. Throughout the day, discover striking rock sculptures that punctuate this ancient landscape, while enjoying a picnic lunch surrounded by timeless desert country. We’ll return to our accommodation in the late afternoon, with dinner at the hotel completing your day of discovery.
DAY 3 | Wednesday 20 May 2026 | Mildura Heritage & the Murray
This morning explores Mildura’s treasures, beginning at Woodsies Gem Shop, where you’ll have time to browse an impressive collection of minerals, crystals and fossils from Australia and beyond. We continue to the heritage-listed Rio Vista House, the magnificent 1891 mansion built by Mildura’s pioneering Chaffey brothers. Your self-guided tour reveals opulent Victorian interiors and the fascinating story of how these Canadian brothers transformed this arid landscape into Australia’s most successful irrigation settlement. Adjacent to the homestead, the Mildura Art Gallery showcases contemporary Australian art alongside historical collections. After lunch at the elegant Rio Vista Cafe, we board the historic paddle steamer PS Rothbury for a leisurely cruise along the Murray River. As the vessel’s paddle wheel churns through the water, enjoy afternoon tea while learning about the river’s role in opening up inland Australia. Free time in Mildura follows, perfect for exploring the riverside precinct before returning to our accommodation around 5:00pm, with dinner at the hotel completing your memorable day.
DAY 4 | Thursday 21 May 2026 | Farewell to the Riverland
After breakfast and a final morning in Mildura, we begin our homeward journey, retracing our route across the border into South Australia where we adjust our watches back thirty minutes to Central Standard Time. Morning tea at Renmark provides an opportunity to stretch and refresh before continuing south through the Riverland’s productive vineyards and orchards. Lunch awaits at the charming Swan Reach Hotel, perfectly positioned on a sweeping bend of the Murray River. This historic riverside pub offers a relaxing conclusion to our tour, with views across the water and hearty country hospitality. After lunch, we continue through the Mid Murray region, pausing briefly in the historic German settlement of Truro before arriving back in Adelaide during the late afternoon, carrying memories of ancient landscapes, river heritage and the warm hospitality of Australia’s inland waterways.
