Your Itinerary

DAY 1 | Friday 12 June 2026 | Adelaide to Port Augusta

Your outback adventure begins as chauffeur cars collect you from home and transport you to our meeting point north of Adelaide. From here, we journey north through the picturesque Clare Valley, one of South Australia’s premier wine regions, with morning tea en route at Gawler. A leisurely lunch at the renowned Stone Hut Bakery provides a taste of country hospitality with freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, and something sweet. Continuing north, we pause at Wirrabara to admire the striking silo art that has transformed this small township into an outback gallery. A visit to the charming coastal hamlet of Port Germein, home to one of Australia’s longest jetties, offers a refreshing change of scenery before we arrive at the Standpipe Golf Motor Inn (08 8642 4033) in Port Augusta, our comfortable home for the evening. With a rich history dating back to 1883 as an outback watering stop for Afghan cameleers, this well-appointed property provides an ideal introduction to the region. Dinner at the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, renowned for its blend of Northern Indian and modern Australian cuisine, completes a wonderful first day of travel.

DAY 2 | Saturday 13 June 2026 | Port Augusta to Roxby Downs

After breakfast, we begin with a visit to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, a fascinating showcase of Australia’s unique desert flora set against the dramatic backdrop of the Flinders Ranges. Enjoy a self-guided stroll through the beautifully designed themed gardens, which feature over 2,000 species of arid-zone plants, and morning tea in the café before we head northwest into the vast Stuart Highway corridor. Lunch at Spuds Roadhouse in Pimba offers a true outback experience at this iconic highway stop. The afternoon brings us to Woomera, Australia’s former top-secret rocket testing facility, where a self-guided tour of the Woomera Heritage Centre and Rocket Park reveals the remarkable Cold War history of this remote settlement, once home to thousands of military and scientific personnel. We continue to Roxby Downs, arriving at Nightcap at Roxby Downs (08 8671 0311), your comfortable home for the next two nights, with dinner completing your day of discovery.

DAY 3 | Sunday 14 June 2026 | Roxby Downs & Andamooka

Today’s exploration begins at the Roxby Downs Visitor Information Centre, where an informative film reveals the story of the enormous Olympic Dam mining operation—one of the world’s largest deposits of copper, uranium, gold, and silver. A visit to the Roxby Downs Art Gallery showcases the creative talent of local and regional artists, followed by morning tea at the welcoming Dunes Café. We then journey to the captivating opal town of Andamooka, where a guided tour unveils the fascinating history of this remote mining settlement, its colourful characters, and the precious opals that drew prospectors from around the world. Dating back to the 1930s, Andamooka retains an authentic frontier atmosphere unlike anywhere else. Lunch at Dine-A-Mite Café provides a welcome break before returning to Roxby Downs for a self-guided drive through the town’s impressive public art installations. We’ll return to our accommodation in the late afternoon, with dinner at the hotel completing a day immersed in outback mining heritage.

DAY 4 | Monday 15 June 2026 | Roxby Downs to Coober Pedy

After breakfast, we farewell Roxby Downs and begin our journey deeper into the outback, retracing our route through Pimba where we enjoy morning tea before continuing along the Stuart Highway. The landscape transforms as we travel through some of Australia’s most remote and starkly beautiful terrain. Lunch at the Glendambo Travel Stop provides sustenance at one of the outback’s legendary roadhouse communities, a vital lifeline for travellers on this vast stretch of highway. A comfort stop at Bon Bon Rest Area offers a chance to stretch your legs and appreciate the immense silence and scale of the arid landscape before we continue to the opal capital of the world. Arriving in Coober Pedy in the late afternoon, we check in to the unique Desert Cave Hotel (08 8672 5688), your home for the next two nights. This unique hotel features both above-ground and underground accommodation, built into the natural sandstone that defines this remarkable town. Dinner provides a comfortable conclusion to this memorable day of outback travel.

DAY 5 | Tuesday 16 June 2026 | Coober Pedy Exploration

Your penultimate day reveals the extraordinary character of Coober Pedy. After breakfast, we visit the stunning Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, where ancient, flat-topped mesas and vivid ochre-coloured formations create a landscape that feels otherworldly—a terrain so dramatic it has served as a filming location for major motion pictures. Returning via the Dingo Fence and Oodnadatta Road, we enjoy morning tea before embarking on a town tour of Coober Pedy’s remarkable underground churches—the Catacomb Church, Serbian Orthodox Church, and St Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, each carved into the earth with extraordinary craftsmanship and offering a cool respite from the desert sun. Lunch at the Outback Bar and Grill is followed by a visit to the legendary Crocodile Harry’s underground home, a quirky testament to one of Coober Pedy’s most colourful residents, and the spectacular Big Winch 360 Cinematic Experience with panoramic views over the opal fields. We’ll return to our accommodation in the early evening, with dinner completing an unforgettable day of discovery.

DAY 6 | Wednesday 17 June 2026 | Farewell to Coober Pedy

Your outback journey concludes this morning with a final opportunity to explore Coober Pedy’s underground world. After breakfast, we visit the Umoona Opal Mine and Museum, where you can discover the fascinating process of opal mining, browse exquisite gemstone displays, and view the underground tunnels that have yielded some of the world’s most spectacular stones. Morning tea provides a final moment to reflect on the week’s adventures before a last opportunity to explore the town’s unique opal shops. We then transfer to Coober Pedy Airport for afternoon flights back to Adelaide. Upon arrival, chauffeur cars will be waiting to transport you home. As you travel, you’ll carry with you memories of South Australia’s dramatic outback landscapes, underground wonders, pioneering stories, and the unique character that makes this corner of the country so compelling.
